ALZHEIMER'S / DEMENTIA

By the year 2017 people with Alzheimer's disease will have tripled from 5 million to 15 million people.

1 out of 5 persons between 75 and 85 years of age suffer from Alzheimer's disease.

To this day, we do not understand how it was originated and we do not know of any cure for the disease.

Persons with Alzheimer's disease live on the average 7 to 10 years after the diagnosis has been given. They will eventually die from the disease.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia totaling over 80% of all types of dementia. Dementia is simply the deterioration of the brain. The brain cells can deteriorate inconsistently in different parts of the brain and at unknown times which makes the disease mysterious, as well as, one of the most ruthless diseases today.

When Alzheimer's disease strikes, it typically victimizes both the person diagnosed and the family member who will likely become the caregiver. In the past, little attention was given to the people caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. The burden of caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease is well known. As the person's condition progresses, caregivers often find themselves cut off from their friends and regular social activities.

Our Caregivers at Golden Home Services specialize in the Alzheimer's / Dementia process. They go through thorough training upon orientation into our company, and are tested on what they have learned.

Because we specialize in this disease process, we can develop an individualized Memory Care Plan for our client's with dementia. This allows us to set up a schedule with the caregiver and the client to keep the client stimulated throughout the day based on their level of the disease progression. This may include activities such as tactile stimulation, bird watching, or simply folding some small pieces of laundry.

The Ten "Do Nots" of Caregiving for a Loved One with Alzheimer's Disease / Dementia:

4. Do not Shame - Abstract

5. Do not Say "I Told You So" - Repeat

6. Do not Remember - Reminisce
